The Proximity Grenade is a thrown explosive weapon used by the Soldier class in Tribes: Ascend. It can be unlocked for 240 Gold or 42000 XP.

Operation

This grenade provides the benefit of exploding early if it will deal full damage to an opponent, but at the cost of reduced damage. The advantage to this is that many players will begin to move out of the way of a grenade thrown in their direction, thus taking reduced damage, while the proximity mine will help to prevent this possibility. Since it only self detonates when the opponent is in full blast range, it is more reliable than other grenades. Keep in mind that if an opponent is close to you the Grenade will detonate and damage you as well.

Tactics

The Proximity Grenade has proven itself useful in Flag Defense by functioning as a temporary, indestructible mine. By throwing the grenade directly on the flag just as a capper comes in, a Soldier can almost guarantee that it will damage or kill him. This has given rise to a fairly new defensive player role: Soldier-on-Flag.
