The Jackal is a sticky explosive weapon used by the Infiltrator in the game Tribes: Ascend. It fires manually detonated sticky grenades. It was released in the [[[Version 0.1.865.0 (Cloak & Dagger)|Cloak & Dagger]] update and can be unlocked for 500 Gold or 44000 XP. This weapon is currently banned in competitive play.
"The Jackal fires up to three rounds that stick to any surface, and are remote triggered for detonation. Perfect for setting up traps and destroying objectives from a safe distance." In-Game Description.
Operation
The Jackal works similairly to the Raider's Arx Buster with the feature to manually detonate by reloading (default R key). When the reload key is pressed the rounds detonate wherever they are, including in mid-air. This is a ballistic weapon so it must be fired in a short arc to reach targets at a distance.
Tactics
Although the Jackal was originally intended to be a C4-like weapon for anti-infantry base assaults, it's rounds have a far firing range and can be manually detonated at any time by pressing the reload button. This makes the Jackal a surprisingly good dueling weapon, as airbursting the grenades can easily catch enemies mid-flight. It is also useful for its original purpose, namely launching a few on the floor or walls of the opposing base and lying in wait for someone to blunder in. The manual detonation allows the Infiltrator to set traps. One excellent tactic in a poorly defended generator room is to place three jackal shots on the generator after it is destroyed and wait. The glowing red generator hides them from view and allows you to get a devastating first shot against anyone trying to repair it.
Since the latest patch, the Jackal has been given slightly better damage against tech but significantly less damage if detonated "airburst" style. The Jackal is now proficient at taking out mini-turrets, force fields, radars, and generators, but still suicidally weak against regular turrets
Firing the 3 sticky grenades and detonating them when enemy capper is about to grab the flag can kill any careless Pathfinder instantly.
